Mr and Mrs Bilham, Sheffield

From Tired Conservatory to Stunning Living Space

When homeowners Mr and Mrs Bilham from Sheffield first approached SolarFrame, their conservatory had become a space they rarely used. Like many older conservatories fitted with polycarbonate roofs, it was too hot in summer and too cold in winter, making it uncomfortable for everyday living.

The Brief

The Bilhams wanted more than just a repair they were looking for a complete transformation. Their aim was to create a comfortable, usable space all year round while maximising natural light without compromising insulation. Just as importantly, they wanted a modern aesthetic that would contrast with their traditional brick home, along with improved access to the garden to better connect indoor and outdoor living.

The Approach

A key part of this project involved removing the existing polycarbonate conservatory structure while retaining and making use of the original base. By keeping the existing foundations, SolarFrame was able to reduce disruption, shorten build time, and deliver a more cost-effective solution without compromising on quality. This approach allowed the entire space to be reimagined while still benefiting from the solid groundwork already in place.

The Solution

A Contemporary Flat Roof with Rooflights

To achieve both performance and style, the Bilhams opted for a flat rubber roof system combined with sleek flat rooflights. This modern roofing solution dramatically improved thermal efficiency, eliminating the common issues associated with older conservatories while still allowing natural light to flood the space. The result is a bright, airy environment with a clean, contemporary ceiling finish that enhances the overall feel of the room.

To complete the transformation, the couple selected anthracite bi-fold doors, creating a seamless opening onto the garden and strengthening the connection between inside and out. The exterior was finished with ash grey rendering, providing a crisp, modern look that contrasts beautifully with the existing brickwork of their home. Together, these design choices have turned what was once a dated conservatory into a striking feature.

The Result

The finished space is now a beautiful, multifunctional living area that the Bilhams can enjoy every day of the year. It maintains a comfortable ambient temperature regardless of the season, while the rooflights ensure the room remains bright and welcoming. The updated design has significantly enhanced the overall appearance of the property, adding both style and kerb appeal. By reusing the existing base while replacing the entire structure above, SolarFrame delivered a smart, efficient transformation that maximised both value and impact.

Conclusion

This project demonstrates how the right design approach and materials can completely reinvent a conservatory. By removing an outdated polycarbonate structure and rebuilding on the existing base, SolarFrame created a space that is not only more energy-efficient, but also far more functional and visually appealing.

For homeowners facing similar challenges, this type of transformation offers a practical and cost-effective way to unlock the full potential of their home, turning an underused conservatory into a modern living space that can be enjoyed all year round.
