Mr and Mrs Twiggs, Knaresborough

From Glass Roof to Year-Round Living Space in Knaresborough

Mr and Mrs Twiggs from Knaresborough wanted to improve their existing conservatory by replacing its glass roof with an energy efficient solid roof.

Their journey with SolarFrame began when one of our flyers landed on their doormat. After taking a look at what SolarFrame could offer, they decided to visit our Leeds showroom, where they were able to see our home improvement products for themselves and get a better idea of the different options available.

Following their showroom visit, Mr and Mrs Twiggs booked an appointment with SolarFrame Design Consultant Steve, who talked them through the possibilities for transforming their existing conservatory.

Replacing the existing glass roof

The couple chose to retain their existing conservatory while upgrading the roof to a lightweight solid roof, giving the space a more substantial, extension-like appearance.

To make sure the room continued to benefit from plenty of natural daylight and fresh air, the design incorporated two opening roof vents. These allow additional light into the conservatory while providing ventilation when required.

The new roof was carefully designed to complement the character of Mr and Mrs Twiggs’ traditional brick property. Externally, the solid roof finish works particularly well alongside the existing red tiled roof and brickwork, helping the conservatory sit naturally against the original house.

A brighter, more comfortable living space

Inside, the transformation has given the conservatory a completely different feel.

The fully finished internal ceiling creates the appearance of a permanent room rather than a traditional glazed conservatory, while the two roof vents and large existing windows ensure the dining area remains flooded with daylight.

A solid conservatory roof also offers improved thermal performance compared with an older glazed or polycarbonate roof, helping create a more consistent temperature throughout the year. SolarFrame’s solid tiled roof system is designed to achieve U-values as low as 0.15W/m²K, helping homeowners turn existing conservatories into spaces that can be enjoyed more comfortably throughout the seasons.

For Mr and Mrs Twiggs, replacing the roof meant they could make a significant improvement to their existing conservatory without replacing the entire structure. The result is a bright, attractive space that feels connected to both their home and garden, while the new roof gives the exterior a smart finish sympathetic to the character of their Knaresborough property.

As part of the project, Mr and Mrs Twiggs also chose SolarFrame to replace the property’s existing wooden windows with new cream uPVC windows.

The soft cream finish was selected to complement the traditional brickwork and character of the cottage, while also tying in beautifully with the conservatory frames. The result is a coordinated look that feels sympathetic to the original property rather than overly modern.

As well as improving the appearance of the home, replacing the older timber windows with uPVC provides a number of practical benefits. The new windows require significantly less maintenance than traditional wooden frames and offer improved thermal efficiency, helping to make the property more comfortable throughout the year.

Together with the new solid conservatory roof and two roof vents, the replacement windows have given Mr and Mrs Twiggs’ home a smart, refreshed appearance while retaining the warmth and character of their Knaresborough property.
